Why Home Groups?
God created us with a hunger for relationship – with Him and others. Home Groups encourage people in their relationships with God, each other, and those outside the group and church. Groups do in-depth study of God’s Word and members learn how to study Scripture for themselves. Home groups allow members to ask questions so they can better apply the Bible to daily life. People grow spiritually as they grow relationally and live life together.
Many people have friends at church but never experience true, meaningful relationships with others. We live in a culture craving relationship and in the midst of our crowded existence, many of us live lonely lives. As God continues to increase the number of people in the Central family, we must grow smaller even as we are growing larger. Home Groups make this possible.
“And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people and the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
- Acts 2:44-47
This is what one can expect to find in the context of a Home Group. This passage describes a way of life devoted to the study of Scripture, lively participation in community, and times of prayer together. It caught the eye of unbelievers then and still does today. The fact that their devotion was spontaneous prompted only by the Spirit (4:31b) rather than contrived in response to an apostolic campaign to “get involved in community” makes it even more remarkable and suggests that it should be considered normative for today.
